The Informatics came together in the experimental sound studio at a Melbourne art school in 1981. They are Michael Trudgeon, Valek Sadovchikoff, Steve Adam, Ramesh Ayyar and Philip McKellar. They started with a shared fascination for electronic music and the capabilities of analogue synthesisers. In 1981, long before the advent of samplers, the Informatics used a collection of analogue synthesisers and other hand built equipment to record and perform. This equipment was patched together to create a unique battery of sounds.
The Informatics have a strong interest in contemporary visual art and cinema. The first public performances were accompanied by large screen video projection and staged in theatre spaces. The video footage was harvested from very disparate sources including pirated television ads, manipulated and then collaged to create new narrative that reinforced the music. Their recorded work became popular in parts of Europe, and later in America, and it has been rereleased and remixed continuously.
