    For Vulture Street Tape Gang, making actual mixtapes, or beat-tapes as they prefer it, is the founding premise, the vital aesthetic constraint that shapes the projects’ sound and performance practice. To them a beat tape is a selection of moments from their improvisations which they collect and compile, the treasure from a quest into the musical unknown. Their first recordings were made onto tape, and released in the streets and at their shows for spare change.

    This year the VSTG have commenced a three volume set of 60 minute sonic collages, the Vulture Street Beat Tape series, which will form a homage to three pseudo-iconic locations along the well known strip in Brisbane’s once freak/outsider/party inner city suburb, West End. Now admidst the inevitable process of it’s gentrification, the places represent the suburb that the native artists/hippys/stoners know and used to walk by everyday when they could afford to live there.

    The first volume, 78 curious and diverse beats, Hung Phat Jewellery, takes its name and design from the mysterious vietnamese gem merchant at Shop 2, no.60. In relation to other potential volumes, it’s across the road from the charmingly filthy apartment block Rio Grande, at no.67, where the tape gang started out before the rent got too high, a little way up the street from the overflowing hole-in-the-wall Mick’s Nuts, which has sat on the corner of Hargrave Rd long before the conception of the well-branded health food store. Other potential volumes might be the Indian Kitchen at no.91 for bollywood vids, cheap dahl and excellent naan and a Madlib reboot waiting to happen, and State High, no. 150 in reference to the beat makers herb of choice.

    {What better way they think to pay homage to a dying suburb than on a dead medium?}

    {The cool (in conceptual sense) thing about a physical cassette is the way it lends itself only to linear, whole enjoyment. At the end of the 30 minutes a side, you flip the tape and the journey continues or you press stop and the tape can do nothing but wait at the exact point you left it. Plus when technology fails you, as it inevitably will and your digital library is lost into the void, your cassette (which you never played because who’s even seen a tape deck??)will sit on your shelf quietly pleased at the fact that it holds the only record of the weird music that used to be around when you were younger. }

    That said, the Vulture Street Beat Tape collection will enjoy a digital release too. Allowing the listener not only the ability to actually listen to the tape, but the freedom to single out their favourite beats, skip others, and reorder or shuffle the beats to remap the sequence to their own liking.

    Includes unlimited streaming of Hung Phat Jewellery via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.
